My bestest memory of G and G
So, Ryan and I got married pretty young in life. It was a whirlwind couple weeks of a wedding, honeymoon, moving away from home. Lots of big changes all at once. Shortly after returning from our honeymoon, we headed to Idaho for grandma and grandpa's 50th wedding celebration. I was immersed in an extended family I had just met and was overwhelmed by all the new faces and surroundings. It was a lot for me to take in to say the least. A week or two after that, we get a call from grandma and grandpa Merrill. They were coming down to Logan to work in the temple and wanted to take us to breakfast. This first breakfast which became one of many, is my best memory of both of them. We sat down at Village Inn and had meaningful conversation. I remember specifically grandpa truly making an effort to get to know me. He asked me about my life but more importantly, how I was really doing with all the changes. I was so homesick and struggling with settling in to my new life. It was as if Grandpa new it. I was honest with him and he and grandma both gave me great advice. Grandma was just so sweet and so supportive. By the end of the breakfast, I remember grandpa telling Ryan he better be good to me because I was one of the good ones. Those words and that conversation meant so much to me. We walked them out to their car and both grandma and grandpa gave me a big, heartfelt hug. In that moment, I felt like I was truly loved and accepted and cherished as a grandchild to them. Whenever I spent time with them in those first few months, well, and beyond, it was some of the only times I was not homesick and was not missing my family because I was with family. I love them both, so much and am forever grateful for their love for me.
